On this page, we outline strategies for telling others about the changes you have made towards a lower carbon lifestyle.
Talk positively
Tackling climate change will require huge shifts in society. However, research has shown that trying to promote behavioural change through fear can be counterproductive – rather than stimulating change, it can lead to anxiety or a sense of helplessness that ultimately results in the need for action being avoided or denied. Talking about what you’ve done to reduce your carbon footprint is a great way to inspire others to do the same.
As you make positive changes to reduce your environmental impact, share your experience with your family, friends, colleagues, customers and clients. Whatever you do, don’t be a bore or preachy or confrontational. Instead, talk positively, and be honest about the ups and downs.
For tips on successful climate-based conversations, have a look at the Climate Outreach website, which includes a fantastic Talking Climate Handbook, plus some great videos and podcasts under the Resources section. The Handbook’s advice is structured around the mnemonic REAL TALK. The Conversation also has a useful article with some nice examples of how to talk simply about climate change.
