“Use your voice, use your vote, use your choice” – Al Gore
According to the UK Committee on Climate Change, around 40% of UK carbon emissions come from households, of which more than half is from heating and electricity use. Some 25% of UK emissions come from transport. Of these, the biggest contribution is from passenger vehicles, with the movement of food and other freight by road coming second. Domestic and international aviation accounts for around 8% of UK emissions. Clearly, changing the way we travel, power our homes and source our food – and reducing the amount of 'stuff' we buy – can make a big difference to our carbon footprint.
On this page, we explore some of the most practical and immediate things that you and your household can do about climate change, and show how this fits into the bigger picture. Many actions cost nothing, while others represent a longer-term investment. The page is inspired by work done at the Grantham Institute (Imperial College London), where researchers drew up a list of the most achievable ways individuals can make a difference.
